Chapter Eight

Peter headed out for the day, just needing to get out of the house, out from all the finishing renovations. He started at the library, where he read for hours in the quiet, then he walked to a coffee shop, hiding from the world.

Around two, he got a text from Max. where r u?

rockinbeans. u?

home bored

sry. He sighed. He didn’t want to go home yet. want2 come here?

Yes!

He had to chuckle at that, he could hear the word in Max’s voice. Max loved coffee. It apparently had no calories. No calories. A great buzz. Totally his Maxie.

It didn’t take Max long to get there, his friend waving at him as he came in. Max didn’t come to him, though; instead he went to the counter to order his coffee.

“I missed you today. Did you have fun?” Max was bright eyed, happy when he came over to Peter’s table.

“I needed to get out of the house for a while.” Peter admitted.

“That’s okay. Are you sure it’s cool that I’m here? I mean, I could go.”

“No, I needed to get out of the house, not get away from you.” Peter touched Max’s hand, and gave him a soft smile. “It was all the mess and the workmen. I didn’t realize it was going to take so long to make the changes.”

“Master Swan says it’s always longer than you think, huh?”

“Yeah.” Peter grinned suddenly. “It sounded like the two of you made a good connection last night.”

“It was…” Max leaned forward, gripped his hand. “Oh, Peter. So good. It was so good to be with him and have him really there.”

He found a smile for Max. “We’re cramping you and your master’s style, aren’t we? Me and Master Devon, I mean.”

“No. No, just… don’t you miss just being with Devon sometimes? Not permanently, just for a few minutes?” Max looked at him, then dropped his eyes. “Sorry. No one’s cramping anything. You know Master Swan loves you and I do too.”

Peter reached for a squeezed Max’s hand. “I didn’t mean to upset you, I just worry that everyone’s doing this because I’m being greedy and wanting to have my cake and eat it, too.”

“I’m not upset. You’re fine. I shouldn’t have bothered you. I was just… I missed you, but I’ll head out. I may go for a walk at the park.”

Peter shook his head. “No. No, stop it.” He knew if their masters were there, that was what they’d say. “I missed you too—and I would have invited you to get out of the house with me, but I didn’t want to disturb your work.” He gave Max another smile, and this one felt better, felt deeper. “I’m happy you missed me and wanted to see me.”

“I did. Work was boring today. You totally should have disturbed me.”

Peter had to laugh. “Okay, let’s make a deal. If one of us wants to disturb the other, we totally should, but not get insulted if the reply is sorry, I have to work.”

Max held out one hand to shake.
